Pathology Services

Blood tests can be taken by either our doctors or practice nurses, who are fully qualified in providing a range of pathology services. Please ensure that you have fasted for 8-12 hours if a fasting blood test is required. Plain water consumption is acceptable and is encouraged to ensure good hydration. If you are a diabetic on medications, please ask your doctor for instructions.

Pap Test / Pap Nurse

All our doctors provide Cervical Screening Test (CST) is significantly much better and has replaced the routine Pap Test. It is currently recommended that a CST be done every FIVE years be done in females from twenty-five years old.

Electrocardiogram

ECG (12-lead ECG) is a medical device that can detect many heart abnormalities by measuring the electrical activity generated by the heart. Unlike simple ECGs, 12-Lead ECGs provide the most accurate and highest quality recording. Our doctors and nurses are adept at performing and reading ECGs.

Iron infusion

Iron deficiency is very common from various causes. If it is severe, it may cause significant tiredness and dizziness due to iron deficiency anaemia. Taking oral iron tablets or/and injections may cause many undesirable side effects and is often poorly effective.

Iron infusions are considered much more effective and rapid. They can be given intravenously in the hospital over many hours. However, a new product of comparable effectiveness and safety, called Ferinject (Ferric Carboxymaltose), is now available and can be infused through a drip intravenously over 15 minutes (or less depending on the dosage required) in our medical clinic. Patients will then need to be observed for 30 minutes afterwards. These are suitable for patients with iron deficiency anaemia above 13 years old only.

Implanon Insertion

Implanon is a small flexible rod used for contraception. It is implanted under the skin of the upper arm and, according to most literature, is at least 99.9% effective. It lasts 3 years and is not expensive (the device cost about $36 for non-health care card holders and $6 for health care card holders). Our doctors are qualified to prescribe, insert, and remove Implanons.

24hr Blood Pressure Monitoring

This is considered a very accurate way to determine if you have a high blood pressure problem (hypertension).

Our staff will put the appropriate device on you to be worn at home over 24 hours. It automatically tracks your blood pressure over 24 hours, allowing us to determine accurately the results, and ultimately, decide if you will need long term treatment.

We charge a small fee of $50 (other providers charge over $150) for this service as Medicare does not provide a rebate for it. Please ensure the device does not get wet and is returned to our clinic the following day for data analysis.

There are some preparation required pre-test.

Spirometry / Lung Function Testing

This test is used to diagnose asthma, COAD, and a number of lung diseases. It is very important that the test is done correctly.

We would request that you do not:

  • Smoke for 4 hours prior to testing
  • Consume alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment
  • Do vigorous exercise for 30 minutes before
  • Wear clothes that restrict chest movement
  • Eat a substantial meal for 2 hours before

Use your short acting bronchodilator inhaler (e.g. Ventolin) on the day of the test (if possible)
If you are on long acting inhalers (e.g. Seretide, Spririva, Serevent), then you should continue using these unless requested to stop by your doctor. Please do not undertake if you are afflicted with a cough or cold

24hr Holter Monitor

Twenty-four hour Holter monitoring is a continuous test to record your heart’s rate and rhythm for 24 hours. You wear the Holter monitor for 24 hours as you go about your normal daily routine.

It can pick up not only your heart’s rate and rhythm but also when you feel chest pains or exhibit symptoms of an irregular heartbeat, or arrhythmia (palpitations, dizziness, light-headness, etc.)

Keep the Holter monitor dry to ensure it functions properly. Take a bath or shower before your appointment to have the monitor fitted and don’t apply any lotions or creams. Avoid activities that might lead to the monitor getting wet.

Magnetic and electrical fields may interfere with the function of the Holter monitor. Avoid areas of high voltage while wearing the monitor.

We provide this service for FREE. Please ensure the device is returned to our clinic the following day for data analysis by a Cardiologist.

Urea Breath Testing

The urea breath test is a rapid diagnostic procedure used to identify infections caused by bacteria call Helicobacter pylori which has been known to potentially cause gastritis, gastric ulcers, and peptic ulcer disease. It is based upon the ability of H. pylori to convert urea to ammonia and carbon dioxide, which is measured when you breathe out. It is a simple non-invasive test, taking about 10-15 minutes, for detecting H. pylori before and after treatment. The test is available to medicare patients at NO COST. We recommend you discuss with your doctor to consider doing this test for the following symptoms:

  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea or/and vomiting
  • Bloating
  • Excessive burping
  • Bad breath

There are some preparation required before the test can be done.

Spirometry Testing

Spirometry testing will take half an hour and is not easy! Please watch the following video from the National Asthma Council Australia before your test.
