The colder months are just around the corner, and for parents, that means doing everything possible to prevent your kids from getting sick this winter. This means it is more important now than ever to start implementing ways to help boost your kid’s immune system.

Rest

Adequate sleep is very important because the lack of sleep can make children more susceptible to illness.  Studies show that lack of sleep can produce a reduction of Natural Killer Cells, which are first-line immune system cells. Therefore, sleep will help keep the immune system in balance. Ideally, toddlers should have up to 13 hours of sleep per day, and children between the ages of three to twelve should have up to 12 hours.    

Eating Healthy

Feeding your child the right food plays a major role in supporting immune balance and fighting off infection.  Natural foods present the immune system with nutrients that can help the body create more white blood cells to help fight infection.  Here are some foods that will keep your kids immune system strong this winter:

1. Citrus Fruits

These types of fruits are high in vitamin C, which helps build up your immune system because they increase the production of white blood cells.  

Citrus fruits include:

  • Oranges
  • Lemon
  • Grapefruit
  • tangerines

2. Broccoli

Broccoli is packed with vitamins A, C and E as well as antioxidants and fibre.

3. Ginger

Ginger helps decrease pain, inflammation and nausea.  

4. Spinach

Similar to broccoli, spinach is rich in vitamin C and packed with numerous antioxidants.  Light cooking also enhances vitamin A.

5. Yoghurt

Yoghurts such as Greek yoghurt can function a probiotic because it contains vitamin D.  This may stimulate your immune system to fight against diseases.

Spending Time With Dirt

Spending time in the dirt can build your child’s immune system.  Research shows that growing up in an over sanitised environment can deprive our immune system of its natural need to learn.  As a result, this can lead to your child being prone to being sick or having allergies.

Washing Hands & Skipping Sharing

On the contrary to playing in the dirt, it is important to teach your children good habits to protect them from germs.  This includes washing their hands regularly and not sharing food and drinks with their friends.
